1. FM Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurates NIP Online Dashboard

  • Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) Online Dashboard in New Delhi through video conferencing.
  • The online dashboard will be a one-stop solution for all stakeholders looking for information on infrastructure projects in India.
  • The dashboard is being hosted on the India Investment Grid (IIG). IIG is an interactive and dynamic online platform that showcases updated and real-time investment opportunities in the country.
  • The inaugural was attended by members of the High-Level Task Force on Infrastructure and Secretaries of various ministries and government departments.

In the budget speech of 2019-2020, Ms Sitharaman announced an outlay of 100 lakh Crore rupees for infrastructure projects over the next 5 years.

 

2. FSSAI bans sale of junk food within 50 metres of school campus

  • Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has restricted the sale of junk and unhealthy food in canteens of schools and other educational institutions.
  • Besides this, the food regulator has prohibited the sale and advertisement of unhealthy food within 50 metres of the school premises.
  • The idea is to provide safe food and a balanced diet for children in schools.
  • Foods which are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) cannot be sold to school children in school canteens or mess premises or hostel kitchens or within 50 metres of the school campus.

3. Defence minister Rajnath Singh launched Atmanirbhar Bharat Saptah

  • Defence minister Rajnath Singh launched the Atmanirbhar Bharat Saptah on 10th August. The move is aimed at promoting the vision for a self-reliant India with increased local manufacturing.
  • Earlier, Mr Singh announced that India will stop the import of 101 weapons and military platforms like transport aircraft, light combat helicopters, conventional submarines, cruise missiles among others on a staggered basis till 2024.
  • Defence minister said that the decision will provide an opportunity to the domestic defence industry to manufacture the items by using their own designs and development capabilities or even adopting the technologies designed and developed by the DRDO.

4. Lebanon PM Hassan Diab steps down in wake of Beirut explosion, protests

  • Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab has resigned from his post in the wake of major blast in Beirut that has triggered public outrage.
  • The Prime Minister’s resignation follows a weekend of anti-government protests after the August 4 explosion in Beirut’s port that decimated the facility and caused widespread destruction, killing more than 160 people and injured about six thousands.
  • Diab’s government was formed in January this year after his predecessor, Saad Hariri, stepped down in October last year in response to the demonstrations.

5. World Biofuel Day: 10th August

  • World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th August to raise awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlight the various efforts made by the Government in the biofuel sector.
  • They are renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and environment friendly fuel which can be seen as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
  • Biofuels have the benefits of reducing import dependency on crude oil, cleaner environment, additional income to farmers and employment generation in rural areas.
