1. Punjab extends curfew by two weeks after May 3

  • Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced extension of curfew in the state by two weeks after May 3.

 

  • Chief Minister said, as per report of the Expert Committee set up to formulate the state’s exit strategy, and the inputs received from various sections of the society, it was necessary to continue with the lockdown restrictions.

 

  • He has also announced steps for limited lifting of the lockdown restrictions, from tomorrow, in the non-containment and non-red zones, with strict adherence to Covid-19 safety protocols. The curfew/lockdown in the state will now remain in force in Punjab till May 17.

2. COVID-19 recovery rate improves to over 25 per cent in India: Govt

– The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients has now been reported to be over 25 per cent from 13.06 per cent in India in the past 14 days.

– Joint Secretary, Luv Agarwal from Health Ministry stated that 1,718 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours which makes the total number of positive cases to be 33,050 in India.

– As per the Health Ministry, the current doubling rate of COVID-19 has improved to 11 days which was 3.4 days before the lockdown was imposed.

– The ministry also added that 8,324 COVID-19 patients which make 25.19 per cent of the total cases have been recovered so far.

 

3. T. S. Tirumurti appointed as Permanent Representative of India to UN

– T. S. Tirumurti has been appointed as the next Ambassador or Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations.

Tirumurti is an IFS officer of 1985 batch.

He is currently the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.

He replaces Syed Akbaruddin who is set to retire this month and had held the post since January 2016

4. Task Force on National Infrastructure Pipeline submits final report to Finance Minister

– The task force on National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) submitted its final report for the fiscal year 2019-25 to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

– The final report projects a total infrastructure investment worth Rs 111 lakh crore during the financial period 2020-25.

– This report carries the recommendations of the task force for the implementation of general and sectoral reforms relating to infrastructure by the centre and states.

5. Banker Suresh N Patel becomes new Vigilance Commissioner

=- Suresh N Patel, an eminent banker has become the new Vigilance Commissioner of the anti-corruption watchdog Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

– He took his oath as a Vigilance Commissioner through a video conference. Following the norms of social distancing, Patel was administered the oath of the office by Central Vigilance Commissioner, Sanjay Kothari through a video link.

6. International Workers’ Day observed across the globe amid COVID-19 crisis

– Labour organizations across the globe will observe the International Workers’ Day also known as the Labour Day or Workers’ Day on 1st May 2020.

– The 2020 International Labour Day is being celebrated amid the Coronavirus pandemic, which has threatened to put thousands of workers and labourers out of job due to economic concerns.

– 1st May is celebrated as the International Labour Day an occasion to commemorate the contribution of workers and the historic labour movement in building the world that we live in today.
