1. National Science Day 2020: 28 February

  • National Science Day (NSD) is observed every year on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. On this day, Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind will give prizes to women scientists who have made unprecedented contributions in the field of science on this day.
  • The theme for this year’s National Science Day 2020 is “Women in Science”, which aims to appreciate the contribution of women in the field of science.

The Raman Effect states that when a wave of light comes out of a liquid, some part of this light wave is scattered in a direction that is different from the direction of the incoming light wave. The Government of India designated 28 February as National Science Day (NSD) in 1986.


2. SN Shrivastava to be next Delhi Police Commissioner, succeeds Amulya Patnaik

SN Shrivastava has been appointed as the next Commissioner of Delhi Police on February 28, 2020. Recently, he was appointed as the special commissioner of Police (Law & Order) to control violence in Delhi.

Shrivastava will take over as new Delhi Police Commissioner on March 1, 2020 as Amulya Patnaik is retiring on February 29, 2020. He was brought to the Delhi by the Ministry of Home Affairs from Jammu and Kashmir where he was working as CRPF’s special director-general.


3. Prime Minister lays foundation stone for Bundelkhand Expressway

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Bundelkhand Expressway at Chitrakoot. The Expressway will be supplementing the nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor announced by the Government of India in February 2018.

The expressway will link the Bundelkhand area to the national capital Delhi through Agra-Lucknow expressway and Yamuna expressway as well as play a vital role in the development of Bundelkhand region.

The 296-kilometre long Expressway is expected to benefit Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jaloun, Oraiyah and Etawah districts.

4. VAJRA: Indian Coast Guard’s sixth offshore patrol vessel launched

The sixth offshore patrol vessel ‘Yard 45006 VAJRA’ to enhance coastal security was formally launched at Chennai. According to Coast Guard, the ‘Yard 45006’ is the sixth in the series of seven offshore patrol vessel projects. The vessel is 98 metres long and 15 metres wide with a gross tonnage of 2,100 tonnes.

It is equipped with two diesel driven engines and can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots. The ship would be fitted with CRN-91 and 12.7 mm guns and an integral twin engine helicopter enhancing its operational, surveillance, search and rescue capability.

VAJRA built under the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ campaign will be used for day and night patrolling and to keep a lookout for anti-terrorist and anti-smuggling operations in the Exclusive Economic Zone.


5. 24th Meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council at Bhubaneswar

The 24th meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council, comprising of the States of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal held on 28th February, 2020 at Bhubaneswar. The Union Minister for Home Affairs, Shri Amit Shah chaired this meeting.

Five Zonal Councils were set up in the year 1957 under Section 15-22 of the States Reorganization Act, 1956.

The Union Home Minister is the Chairman of each of these 5 Zonal Councils and Chief Minister of the host State, to be chosen by rotation every year, is the Vice-Chairman.

6. Government approves 32 projects under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana

The Union Government has approved 32 projects in the food processing sector under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY). The projects will be spread across 17 states. The government has earmarked funds worth Rs 406 crores for the projects.

The main focus area of the projects is to boost employment opportunities in rural areas and create direct and indirect employment for about 15000 people.

The PMKSY scheme aims to create processing and preservation capacities and modernise existing food processing units to increase the quality of processing and reduce wastage.

The implementation period of the PMKSY scheme is 2016-20 and it has a total outlay of Rs 6,000 crore.
