2. Indian origin scientist leads a team to develop Coronavirus vaccine

  • SS Vasan, a doctor of Indian origin, has been made the head of the team of researchers to develop a vaccine to fight the Coronavirus.
  • The deadly Coronavirus that started from Wuhan has reached nearly 31 countries in the world. More than 600 people have been reported dead in China from this virus while more than 30,000 people have been found infected.
  • The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) issued a statement saying that the purpose of this research is to understand the Coronavirus properly.

3. RBI Monetary Policy 2019-20

  • The Reserve Bank of India released the Sixth Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2019-20.
  • The policy repo rate remains unchanged at 5.15 percent under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF). Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF remains unchanged at 4.90 percent and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 5.40 per cent.
  • Retail Inflation hiked to 7.4% in December 2019 from 5.5% in November 2019 and 4.6% in October 2019. The Retail Inflation was the highest since July 2014.
  • The Policy estimates the CPI Inflation for the Q4 of 2019-20 at 6.5%.
  • The RBI’s six-member monetary policy committee (MPC) voted six-zero in favour of the status quo of interest rates. At the same time, the central bank maintained an accommodative stance to support growth.
  • The slowdown in the Indian Economy has been attributed to weak corporate investments, decline in demand in real estate & automobile sector, and poor household spending.

4. Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Campaign starts

  • ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ – a 18 days campaign has been launched to promote cultural unity among various states of the country that will continue till 28 February 2020.
  • The objective of the program is to showcase the rich culture and heritage, food, handicrafts and customs of the 36 states and union territories of the country. And itwill also help to identify and highlight various cultures and traditions of the country.
  • Unity has been established by integrating these variations of cultural elements like language, religion, caste, customs, food and living in India.
  • Two different states have been paired to promote cultural exchanges.
    • Jammu and Kashmir has been paired with Tamil Nadu,
    • Punjab with Andhra Pradesh,
    • Uttarakhand with Karnataka,
    • Himachal Pradesh with Kerala,
    • Delhi with Sikkim and
    • Rajasthan has been paired with Assam.
  • Experts believe that present-day India is not a single culture but a group of separate traditions that have remained one as a nation. So,it will become an important factor in the strengthening and unity of the nation.

 

5. Record-setting Nasa astronaut returns home

  • NASA’s astronaut Christina Koch returned from space to Earth safely after an 11-month mission, breaking the world record for the most time spent by a woman in space.
  • Christina Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman — 328 days — in a mission on the orbiting laboratory that spanned 5,248 orbits of the Earth and 22,36,99,000 km approximately surpassing the previous record of 289 days held by fellow American Peggy Whitson.
  • Koch’s medical data will be especially valuable to NASA scientists as the agency draws up plans for a long-duration manned mission to Mars.
  • The mission is roughly the equivalent of 291 round trips to the Moon.
  • Christina Koch performed six spacewalks during her mission and saw the arrival of a dozen visiting vehicles and the departure of a dozen spacecraft.
  • Christina Koch, during her stay on space station, was also part of the first cookie baking session in space.

6. PM Modi sets target of 5 billion dollars for defence exports

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government has set a defence export target of 5 billion dollars in the next five years.
  • The export of defence equipment from India was about 2,000 crore rupees. In the last 2 years, it has gone up to 17,000 crore rupees.
  • The eleventh edition of the mega defence event held in Lucknow with the theme “India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub”. The five-day DefExpo is being attended by 38 defence ministers and top executives of 172 foreign defence majors and 856 Indian companies.

 

7. Nepal to count LGBT population in census for first time

  • Nepal’s upcoming national census will for the first time count the LGBT population in the Himalayan nation in order to better allocate government jobs and education set aside for minority groups.
  • Nepal’s laws prescribe special quotas for minorities in workplaces, schools and colleges, and access to discounted healthcare, but in the absence of census data, members of the LGBT community say they haven’t been allocated these privileges.
  • The LGBT community in Nepal has long demanded that the census taken every 10 years include a count of sexual minorities.
  • Citizens will be able to identify themselves as male, female or other sexual gender.
  • A new constitution adopted in 2015 forbids all discrimination based on sexual orientation, reaffirming a 2008 Supreme Court ruling.
