1. India finished 2019 as the top shooting nation in the world

  • According to International Shooting Sport Federation’s (ISSF), India finished 2019 as the top shooting nation in the world with its sparkling show, leaving behind Olympic heavyweights China and the USA.
  • The medal tally stood at 21 gold, 6 silver & 3 bronze as India topped all the Rifle-Pistol World Cups and Finals in a unforgettable year.
  • China placed 2nd with 11 gold, 15 silver and 18 bronze for a total of 44 podium finishes and USA placed 3rd with 15 medals, viz., 6 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze.

2.  DRDO’s Naval variant makes its first successful landing

  • The naval version of the indigenously-built Tejas light combat aircraft successfully took off from deck of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
  • With the successful landing of the Light Combat Aircraft, India has entered into the club of selected nations having the capability to design a fighter jet which can land on an aircraft carrier.
  • LCA is the smallest and lightest Multi-Role Supersonic Fighter Aircraft of its class, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization.
  • The aircraft on Saturday made its first landing on the deck of INS Vikramaditya which was also a major milestone.

3. Taal volcano erupts near Manila

  • A small active Taal volcano near the Philippine capital Manila spewed a massive cloud of ash steam that forced villagers to flee and shut down the capital’s international airport, offices and schools.
  • Taal, one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes, sits in the middle of a lake about 70km (45 miles) south of the centre of Manila.
  • One of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, Taal has erupted more than 30 times in the past five centuries, most recently in 1977.
  • The Philippines lies on the Ring of Fire, a belt of volcanoes circling the Pacific Ocean that is also prone to earthquakes.

4. Kolkata Port renamed as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port

  • PM Narendra Modi celebrated the 150th anniversary of the historic Kolkata Port Trust and renamed the port after Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
  • He also released a commemorative stamp on 150th years of the Kolkata Port Trust.
  • This port represents industrial, spiritual and self-sufficiency aspirations of India.
  • Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 which later went on to become today’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

5. Australian Koalas become endangered in bush fires

  • The Australian Koalas are to be put under “endangered” from “vulnerable” as 30% of their habitat were destroyed by the bushfires which began in early-September.
  • The fires, destroyed more than 2,000 homes, and left an estimated 1 billion animals dead. It has also destroyed more than 10 million hectares of land.
  • The country experienced one of its hottest and driest years, in part, because of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), which is a variation in sea surface temperature on the Indian Ocean that drives the weather patterns.

6. World Future Energy Summit begins

  • The 13th edition of the World Future Energy Summit was inaugurated in Abu Dhabi.
  • 33,500 participants from 170 countries and 800 specialist exhibitors are attending the four-day annual event.
  • The theme for this year’s summit is “Rethinking Global Consumption, Production, and Investment.”
  • The 2020 edition includes exhibition and forum programmes focusing on 5 main pillars, i.e., energy, solar, water, waste and smart cities.

7. Indian squad for ICC Women’s T-20 World Cup announced

  • Harman Preet Kaur-led India squad was announced in Mumbai for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, starting on 21st February.
  • The left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as the vice-captain of the side.
  • The 15-year-old batting sensation Shafali Verma has made her cut into the Indian squad, which will also mark her first appearance in an ICC event.
  • In the 2020 T20 World Cup, India Women are placed in Group A along with hosts Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, while Group B comprises England, South Africa, the West Indies, Pakistan and Thailand.
