1. India is celebrating 72nd Army Day

  • The Army Day is celebrated every year on January 15 at all Army Command headquarters to honour our country’s soldiers who set the greatest example of selfless service and brotherhood, and above all, love for the country.
  • This day is celebrated every year on this day because Field Marshal KM Cariappa took command of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher in 1949.
  • Army Day Parade is organized at Parade Ground, Delhi on Army Day. This parade is also part of the Republic Day parade. India’s first Chief of Defense Staff Bipin Rawat will also participate in the parade along with the heads of the three armies.

 2. Anand Prakash Maheshwari appointed Director General of CRPF

  • Senior IPS officer A P Maheshwari has been appointed as Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • He would soon take over the charge from ITBP Director General S.S. Deswal who was given the “additional” charge to head the country’s largest paramilitary force.
  • Maheshwari, a 1984 batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, is at present Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Union Home Ministry.
  • The post of DG CRPF was lying vacant after R R Bhatnagar retired on December 31.

3. Russian Government Resigns after Putin Calls for Constitutional Reforms

  • The Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has resigned from his post on January 15, 2020, along with his cabinet. He submitted his resignation to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
  • President Putin said that Medvedev’s cabinet failed to achieve its goals.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested Mikhail Mishustin’s name as the new Prime Minister of the country.
  • According to the reports, the purpose of these constitutional amendments is to create a post so that even after the end of the President’s term, Putin can continue to hold an important post in Russia.

4. ICC Awards 2019

  • Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been named captain of both ICC Test and ODI teams of 2019 and awarded ICC 2019 ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award.
  • Rohit Sharma has also been honoured with the ICC ODI Cricketer of the year 2019 award.
  • England’s all-rounder Ben Stokes has been honoured with the biggest ICC award- Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for being the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2019.
  • Deepak Chahar won the ICC award for the T20I Performance of 2019.

5. India will get investment from e-commerce company Amazon

  • The e-commerce company, Amazon has announced the incremental investment of 1 USD bn in India.
  • The investment by Amazon will have the prime objective of digitising the small and medium businesses (SMB’s) in India.
  • They have also announced plans to boost its size and scale by exporting worth USD 10 billion of ‘Make in India’ goods by year 2025.

6. World Archery appoints observer for AAI elections

  • The World Archery has appointed its Asia Region Vice-President, Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapol as the observer for AAI polls after a discussion with the Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra.
  • The observer will be required to submit a report on his observations and based on the report the Executive Committee of the World Archery will consider ‘conditional lifting’ of the suspension on the Indian Archery Federation.
  • The World Archery had de-listed the Archery Association of India in July 2019 and suspended it in August 2019 for going against its guidelines by electing two parallel bodies.
  • The elections of the Archery Association of India (AAI) are scheduled to be held in New Delhi on January 18, 2020.

7. ISRO’s communication satellite to be launched on Jan 17

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch ‘GSAT-30’ from French Guiana on January 17, 2020 which will be ISRO’s first satellite launch of the year 2020.
  • GSAT 30 will serve as a replacement to INSAT-4A spacecraft services with enhanced coverage. The satellite will be launched along with the European Space Company’s telecommunication satellite- Eutelsat Konnect.
  • The 3,357-kg satellite is slated to blast off from the Ariane Launch Complex at Kourou, a French territory located along the northeastern coast of South America.
  • The communication satellite will be used to support VSAT networks, DTH television services, digital satellite news gathering, DTH television services, teleport services, television uplinking, cellular backhaul connectivity and other such applications.
