1. Martyrs’ Day 2020: Mahatma Gandhi’s 72nd Death Anniversary

  • Every year January 30 is observed as Mahatma Gandhi’s Martyrdom day. This year India is observing the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in Birla House on January 30, 1948.
  • Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is known for his thoughts and principles during his lifetime.
  • Apart from this day, March 23 is also observed as Martyr’s Day because Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on that day.

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 02, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He completed his early education from Gujarat and Bombay University.

Champaran Movement in 1918 was Gandhi’s first achievement in the freedom struggle.
He also organized the Noncooperation movement in 1920. After that, Mahatma Gandhi organized a civil disobedience movement in 1930.
In 1942, Gandhi called the Quit India Movement which is known as one of the biggest and successful campaigns of his lifetime.

 

2. Oxford declares ‘Samvidhaan’ the Hindi word of 2019

  • Oxford University Press (OUP) declared ‘Samvidhaan’ (Constitution) the Oxford Hindi Word of 2019.
  • The Oxford Hindi Word of the Year is a word or expression that has attracted a great deal of attention and reflects the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past year.
  • In November 2019, Oxford Dictionaries has named “climate emergency” as its 2019 Word of the Year.

3. CISF contingent adjudged Best Marching Contingent in Republic Day parade

  • The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) contingent has been adjudged the “Best Marching Contingent” amongst Para-Military Forces and other Auxiliary Marching Contingents in 2020 Republic Day parade.
  • This is the sixth time that CISF Contingent has won the Best Marching Contingent award.
  • Earlier CISF Contingent was adjudged Best Marching Contingent in the year 2007, 2008, 2013, 2015 & 2017.

This year, for the first time, the wreath laying ceremony was held at the newly built National War Memorial instead of Amar Jawan Jyoti beneath the India Gate arch.

 

4. Assam tableau wins first prize at 71st Republic Day parade

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave away Best Tableaux awards for Republic Day Parade, 2020 in New Delhi.
  • Assam’s tableau which portrayed the unique craftsmanship and culture of the state has been chosen as the best tableau, followed by Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
  • The tableaux of National Disaster Relief Force and Jal Shakti Mission were chosen as the best among the Ministries and Departments.

The Republic Day Parade 2020 included a total of 22 tableaux including 16 from various states and union territories and remaining 6 from various ministries, departments and the National Disaster Response Force.

 

5. Taranjit Singh Sandhu appointed India’s ambassador to the US

  • Senior diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to the US.
  • Sandhu, a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently posted as High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka.
  • He replaces Harsh Vardhan Shringla as India’s envoy in Washington.

6. Sheikh Khalid appointed as new Prime Minister of Qatar

  • Qatar appointed Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdelaziz Al Thani as the new Prime Minister.
  • He will replace Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.
  • Qatar is a part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which is a political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries.
