1. World Cancer Day 2020

  • World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 04 to create awareness about cancer. Several workshops and campaigns are organized on this day.
  • The theme of the World Cancer Day 2020 is – ‘I am and I will’ thathighlights the value of every individual to fight against cancer and has been proposed for the next three years.
  • According to the official website of world cancer day, every year about 9.6 million people die from cancer. And it has also mentioned in its report that at least 1/3 of common cancers are preventable.
  • In the year 2000, a Charter of Paris was signed between UNESCO and then French President Jacques Chirac to prevent, promote research and improve patient service. So, the Day was first time celebrated on February 04, 2000.

2. Pakistan declares national emergency to battle locusts attack

  • Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has declared a national emergency to tackle the insects destroying crops on a large scale in Punjab province, the country’s main region for agricultural production.
  • It was first attacked in March 2019 that destroyed over 900000 hectares of land in South Punjab, Khyber, and Sindh regions.
  • According to the UN report, Somalia and Ethiopia witnessed the biggest locusts attack in 25 years. However, Kenya, a neighboring country, has not seen a locust threat in 70 years.
  • Pakistan and Somalia are the worst affected nations of locust attack this year.
  • Locusts are usually attacked in June and July as they are active only during the summer and rainy seasons. These grasshoppers can fly up to 150 kilometers per day. An adult grasshopper can eat food equal to its weight per day (about 2 gms) that makes it a great threat to crops and food grains.

3. BAFTA Awards 2020

  • The 73ndBritish Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) award ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Britain.
  • 1917 was the big winner of the night with seven awards, including the coveted Best Film and Director.

  • As for “Joker,” it won three awards — including for consensus Oscar Best Actor favorite Joaquin Phoenix, who had the speech of the night in light of this season’s diversity and inclusion spotlight that also impacted BAFTA’s noms.

 

4. Madhya Pradesh bags first position for implementation of PMMVY

  • Madhya Pradesh has bagged the first position for the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
  • Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani will present this award to Madhya Pradesh at a function in New Delhi.
  • Indore district has also bagged the first place for better performance of the scheme.
  • The main objective of the Matru Vandana Yojana is to provide incentives of five thousand rupees for the loss of wages of working women and to ensure their proper rest and nutrition during pregnancy.

5. Archaeological locations to be developed into ‘Iconic Sites’

  • In her Budget 2020 speech, Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman announced that five archeological locations of India will be developed as ‘iconic sites’ with an on-site museum.
  • These five archeological locations are –
  1. Sivasagar (Assam: Sivasagar district)
  2. Rakhigarhi (Haryana: Hisar District)
  3. Dholavira (Gujarat: Kutch District)
  4. Hastinapur (Uttar Pradesh: Meerut District)
  5. Adichanallur (Tamil Nadu: Thoothukudi District)
  • The minister also recognized the fact that lack of trained man-power is a handicap affecting tourism. Hence, the Budget proposed to establish an Indian Institute of Heritage and Conservation under Ministry of Culture.
  • Further, the government shall also support setting up of a Tribal Museum in Ranchi and a maritime museum would be set up at Lothal- the Harrapan age maritime site near Ahmedabad by Ministry of Shipping.

 

6. SAMPRITI-IX begins in Meghalaya

  • The 9th edition of India-Bangladesh joint military exercise Sampriticommenced at Umroi, Meghalaya on Feb 3, 2020 with an objective to provide basic counter-terrorism training for mountainous and jungle locations.
  • A delegation of Bangladesh Army comprising of 31 officers and 138 other ranks are participating in the joint military exercise.
  • The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen and broaden the interoperability and cooperation between the Indian and Bangladesh’s armies and to strengthen and expand the aspects of mutual cooperation between both armies.
