1. President confers International Gandhi Awards for Leprosy

  • President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the International Gandhi Awards for Leprosy toDr NS Dharmashaktuin the individual category and the Leprosy Mission Trust under the institutional category.
  • The International Gandhi Awards for Leprosy aimed to recognize the outstanding work by individuals and organisations to fight leprosy and eliminate the prejudices associated with it.
  • Dr. N S Dharamshaktu has dedicated several years of his life towards fighting leprosy.
  • The International Gandhi Award for Leprosy was constituted by the Gandhi Memorial Leprosy Foundation that was established in 1950 to commemorate the compassion that Mahatma Gandhi possessed and his services towards people with leprosy.

 2. Jaipur receives UNESCO World Heritage City certificate

  • Jaipur, the Pink City, was conferred the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site on February 05, 2020.
  • Rajasthan Tourism Minister Vishwendra Singh and Urban Development & Housing Minister Shanti Dhariwal received the certificate for Jaipur from UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.
  • UNESCO had declared Jaipur’s Walled City, famous for its grid plan-based architecture and buildings constructed with a pink facade, as a World Heritage Site in July last year.
  • The status of World Heritage City boosts domestic and international tourism, strengthens the local economy and also provides employment to the people.

3. Flipkart shuts down fashion portal Jabong, to focus fully on Myntra

  • After four years of its acquisition, Flipkart reportedly formally closed operations of Jabong, the Indian fashion, and lifestyle e-commerce portal to focus fully on its premium fashion platform Myntra for its apparel business.
  • Flipkart reportedly had slashed a chunk of its marketing expenditure on Jabong and had been giving incentives to users to move from the Jabong app to Myntra on its homepage over the past few months.
  • Flipkart redirected Jabong’s flagship portal and app to Myntra’s shopping window as part of the closure plan which may help Flipkart consolidate operations and make its marketing budget efficient.

Flipkart had acquired fashion e-commerce platform Myntra in May 2014 and Jabong in 2016. And soon after the Walmart acquisition in November 2018, Flipkart merged both Myntra and Jabong.

4. Donald Trump acquitted of all impeachment charges

  • US President Donald Trump was acquitted of the two impeachment charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in the Senate culminating the historic impeachment trial.
  • The Democrats needed two-thirds of votes to impeach Trump in the Senate but they failed in their attempt as they did not have the required majority.
  • The Republican-majority Senate voted to acquit Trump in both the impeachment charges- by 52-48 to acquit him of abuse of power and by 53-47 to acquit him of obstruction of Congress. The Democrats needed two-thirds of votes to impeach Trump.
  • The ruling Republican party has 53 seats in the 100-member Senate, while the Democrats have 47 seats.
  • The Democrat-led House of Representatives had voted along party lines on two articles of impeachment on December 18, 2020 to initiate the impeachment process.

 5. India becomes second largest steel producer of Crude Steel

  • As per World Steel Association data, India became the second largest steel producer of crude steel after China in 2018 and 2019, by replacing Japan.
  • India’s crude steel production in 2018 was at 109.3 MT, an increase of 7.7 per cent from 101.5 MT in 2017.
  • China remains number one with 920 million tonnes of production in 2018 and 996.3 million tonnes in 2019.
  • The other nations in the list of top 10 steel producing countries include the United States, which is at the 4th position as the country produced 86.7 MT of crude steel in 2018, followed by South Korea at the 5th place with 72.5 MT of crude steel, Russia at 6th with 71.7 MT, Germany at 7th with 42.4 MT, Turkey at 8th with 37.3 MT, Brazil at 9th with 34.7 MT and Iran at the 10th position with 25 MT crude steel in 2018.

6. Cabinet approves IIIT Laws Amendment Bill 2020

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which proposes to declare five IIITs in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode as Institutions of National importance with an objective to formalize the institutes.
  • Five IIITs in the PPP mode are at Bhopal, Surat, Bhagalpur, Raichur and Agartala.
  • The IIITs in PPP mode as Institutions of National importance will have the power to award degrees and use the categorization of B.Tech, M.Tech or Ph.D. degree, which is issued by a University of National Importance under the IIIT (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017.
  • With this amendment, the total number of IIITs that have been declared as institutions of national importance will go up to 25.

 

7. Spartacus actor passes away

  • The legendary Hollywood actor, Kirk Douglas passed away at his family home in Beverly Hills.
  • Kirk Douglas was the father of Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker Michael Douglas and one of the last surviving superstars of Hollywood cinema’s golden age.
  • Douglas has acted in almost 100 movies in his 60-year career. He has acted in iconic films like the Spartacus (1960), Paths of Glory (1957) and The Vikings (1958).
  • He was nominated for the Oscar Award three times, last time for his role in ‘Lust for Life’, but missed out each time.

 

8. International Seafood Show in Kochi from 7-9 February 2020

  • The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in association with the SEAI is organizing the 22nd edition of India International Seafood Show (IISS) 2020 in Kochi from 7-9 February 2020. The theme of this year’s seafood show is “Blue Revolution- Beyond Production to Value Addition”.
  • Over 200 exhibitors, 350 stalls and more than 5000 delegates, including foreign delegates, are expected to attend the three-day event at Kochi.
  • IISS 2020 will highlight the technological advances and sustainable practices followed in the seafood processing sector in India.
