1. GSAT 30 launched

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched ‘GSAT-30’ from French Guiana tomorrow aboard Ariane 5 launch vehicle (VA 251).
  • The satellite was launched along with the European Space Company’s telecommunication satellite- Eutelsat Konnect.
  • GSAT 30 will serve as a replacement to INSAT-4A spacecraft services with enhanced coverage.
  • GSAT-30 is an operational communication satellite with a mission life of up to 15 years. It has been configured to give a boost to communication services such as television uplink, DTH,  digital satellite news and VSAT. It weighs approximately 3357 kg.
  • The launch vehicle first placed GSAT-30 in its designated orbit, followed by the release of Konnect. The full mission lasted for approximately 38 minutes and 25 seconds from liftoff to final separation. GSAT 30 successfully separated from the upper stage of Ariane 5.

2. WEF Global Risks Report 2020

  • The World Economic Forum released its 15th edition of the Global Risks Report.
  • For the first time, the report features the results from over 200 members of its Global Shapers Community—a generation of emerging global social entrepreneurs and leaders, which uses its digital savviness to spotlight issues that are potential existential risks not only to its generation but to the wider global community.
  • The climate-related issues dominated all top-five long-term risks in terms of likelihood. The other threats included geopolitical instability and economic slowdown.
  • Biodiversity loss was listed as the second most impactful and third most likely risk in the coming decade.
  • Another key concern is the rising use of digital technology, which though is bringing tremendous economic and societal benefits to the global population; it also gives rise to potential risks such as unequal access to the internet, lack of global technology governance framework and cyber insecurity.
  • The report further predicts the economic climate to continue to be challenging, especially in 2020, which could see increasing economic confrontations, discontent and domestic political polarization.

3. Bru-Reang refugees from Mizoram to settle down in Tripura

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah has signed a historic pact for permanent solution of Bru refugees’ issue.
  • According to the agreement between representatives of the central government, Tripura, Mizoram and Bru tribes, they will now be settled in Tripura, each of the displaced families will be given 40×30 sq ft residential plots.
  • A fixed deposit of Rs. 4 lakh will be given to each family as an amount of government aid. They will be able to withdraw this amount after two years and each family will be given the agreement highlights that each displaced family will also be given free ration for two years and aid of Rs. 1.5 lakh to build their houses and will be given Rs. 5,000 cash per month for two years.

In 1997, about 30,000 Bru-Reang tribals fled from Mizoram due to ethnic tension and took shelter in Tripura’s refugee camps.

The government of India has been making several efforts for permanent rehabilitation of Bru-Reang since 2010.

In 2018, the government offered a package to these refugees for their peaceful return to the Mizoram.

 

 

4. Indian Railways, SBI come together to offer doorstep banking in 585 stations

  • Indian Railways’ South Central Railway(SCR) zone has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State Bank of India(SBI) for ‘doorstep banking’ covering all 585 Railway stations over SCR Zone.
  • It will help in hassle free collection of traffic earnings by SBI and remittance into Government account avoiding delay in transmission of traffic cash earnings. And unwanted accumulation of cash at railway stations will be avoided.
  • Real time information about the cash being deposited by different stations will help in better supervision and accountability.

5. 51st unit of self-propelled K9 Vajra-T Guns flagged off

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the 51st unit of K-9 Vraj-T cannon at the Larsen & Toubro armored system complex at Hazira, Surat.
  • The gun weighs 50 tonnes and can fire 47-kilogram bombs at targets up to a distance of 43 kilometres and can also rotate at a zero radius.
  • The Ministry of Defence had signed an agreement of Rs 4500 crore with L&T company in 2017 to supply 100 units of K9 Vajra-T 155mm/52 caliber guns to the Indian Army under ‘Make in India’ initiative.
  • K-9 Vajra is compatible with NATO ammunition standards.

6. Arunachal Pradesh to ‘red list’ its orchids for protection

  • Arunachal has become the first state in the country to initiate the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) ‘red listing’ at the state level after it inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the IUCN.
  • The project will be spread across 12 months, during which workshops on red list assessment will be conducted by experts from the IUCN.
  • Nearly half (612 out of 1256) of India’s orchid species can be found in the Northeastern state especially Arunachal Pradesh — and there is a strong possibility that there could be many, many more. In fact, just this month, there is confirmation of two new species of orchids (Thrixspermum japonicum and Gastrochilus platycalcaratus) from the state’s Ziro Valley.
  • The IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity.

7. Jio becomes No.1 Telecom Company

  • Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd is now the number one telecom operator in India by both subscriber base as well as revenue market share, achieving the feat in just more than three years of starting operations.
  • The company added 5.6 million mobile subscribers in November, taking its total user base to 369.93 million, and replacing Vodafone Idea Ltd as the India’s largest mobile services provider by subscribers, showed data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
  • In addition to this, the telco held 32.04 percent share in the wireless subscriber segment in November 2019, as against Vodafone Idea’s 29.12 percent and Bharti Airtel’s 28.35 percent.
