1. First ‘Made in India’ COVID19 Test Kit to diagnose COVID-19 gets the approval

a. First Made in India Test Kit to diagnose COVID-19 has got commercial approval by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
b. According to the developers, it would cost nearly one-fourth of the current procurement cost and is faster as it screens and detects the infection within 2.5 hours as compared with over 7 hours by others.
c. The kit has been developed by Pune-based molecular diagnostics company Mylab Discovery Solutions Pvt Ltd.
d. The kit has been named as ‘Mylab PathoDetect COVID-19 Qualitative PCR kit’.

2. Coronavirus will bring global recession worse than 2009: IMF

a. IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva said that the global economy is facing a huge crisis due to the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic. This loss can be so big that there is a possibility of a big economic slowdown even than the year 2009. Global investors have withdrawn investment of nearly USD 83 billion from India.

b. According to the IMF, the world economy has fallen by 1.5% due to the current shutdown. Also, the outlook for global growth for 2020 is negative.

c. The International Monetary Fund will provide USD 1 trillion to fight the Coronavirus. More than 80 countries have requested emergency funds from the International Monetary Fund.

3. G-20 Virtual World Summit to be held today

a. The first G-20 virtual summit will be held on March 26, 2020 under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabian King Salman. The summit will bring together the world’s 20 major economies who will discuss measures and guidelines to address the COVID 19 pandemic.

b. All G20 nations including India will be joining the summit through a video conference. The purpose is to discuss mechanisms and responses to coronavirus outbreak as per the WHO guidelines.

c. The decision to conduct the summit through video conference is taken in light of the ongoing health crisis that has affected economies, education, health all over the world.

4. 38th district to be formed in Tamil Nadu

a. In Tamil Nadu, a new district is going to be formed after bifurcating the Nagappattinam district.

b. The new district will be headquartered at Mayiladuthurai, in the heart of the Delta region. Mayiladuthurai, located at a distance of 281 kilometres from Chennai, is home to several temples dating back to the medieval Chola era.

c. There are currently 37 districts in Tamil Nadu, of which five new districts were formed only last year. The state Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy made the announcement saying it would be the 38th district in the state.

5. First phase of Census, NPR postponed amid lockdown

a. The first phase of Census India 2021 which is the house listing operation and National Population Register (NPR) updation has been postponed until further orders.

b. The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner said the decision has been taken in view of COVID-19 outbreak and nationwide lockdown due to the pandemic.

c. The exercise was scheduled to be kicked off on various dates decided by States and Union Territories on 1st April.

6. Indian-origin US author Ruchika Tomar wins 2020 PEN/Hemingway Award

a. Indian-origin American author Ruchika Tomar has been named the winner of the prestigious 2020 PEN/Hemingway Award for her debut novel ”A Prayer for Travelers”.

b. The award, honouring a “distinguished” first novel, includes a USD 25,000 prize and a month-long Residency Fellowship at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, a retreat for artists and writers, valued at USD 10,000.

c. The PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel honours a debut novel of exceptional merit by an American author who has not previously published a full-length book of fiction.
