TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao to take oath of office at 1.25 p.m.
The Election Commission of India has announced the constitution of the new Legislative Assembly for Telangana.
The new Assembly will have 88 members of the TRS, 19 members of the Congress, two from the TDP, seven from the MIM, one member affiliated to All India Forward Bloc and one independent MLA. Gazette notification relating to the constitution of the new Assembly was issued a day after the counting of votes was completed on Tuesday night.
Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar, accompanied by EC principal secretary S.K. Rudola, called on Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan to apprise him about the conduct of the election, the first full-fledged one, after the formation of Telangana. The CEO submitted the list of the winning candidates along with their party affiliation to the Governor after which the gazette notification had been issued.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao tendered his resignation from the post and a letter in this regard had been sent to the Governor through his secretary paving the way for the Governor to invite the ruling party to form the new government. Ministers have have also called on the Governor this afternoon and submitted their resignations from the posts.
Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan will administer the oath of office to Mr. Rao and, possibly one Cabinet Minister, at 1.25 p.m., Raj Bhavan sources said adding that all arrangements were made.
Local body polls
On the urgency of installing a government without a full fledged Cabinet in place, K Chandrasekhar Rao told a press conference that it owed to the requirement of issuing the notification for local body elections in five to six days.
The High Court had ordered that the elections be completed by January 10 which necessitated that the government be in place to issue the notification urgently. He expected the Election Commission to publish the gazette notification on constitution of the new Assembly by Thursday morning after which the swearing in can take place.
Since it was not possible to finalise his entire team within the upper limit of 18 berths in a day or two by factoring in various considerations, including giving representation to various sections of people, Mr. Rao said he had decided to buy some more time. There was a need to increase the ceiling beyond eighteen ministerial posts to accommodate all sections, he added.
