1. Bharat Biotech, Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines get emergency use approval in India

  • The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved the emergency use of both Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin for immunisation against Covid-19 in India.
  • Both vaccines need to be administered in two doses and stored at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
  • Under the first phase of COVID-19 vaccination, free vaccines will be provided to the most prioritized beneficiaries across India which includes 3 crore frontline workers.

2. PM Modi to inaugurate National Metrology Conclave today

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the inaugural address at the National Metrology Conclave today through video conferencing.
  • He will also dedicate National Atomic Timescale and Bhartiya Nirdeshak Dravya to the nation and lay the foundation stone of the National Environmental Standards Laboratory.
  • Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan will also be present on the occasion.
  • National Metrology Conclave 2021 is being organised by CSIR-National Physical Laboratory.
  • The theme of the conclave is ‘Metrology for the Inclusive Growth of the Nation’.

 

3. PM to dedicate Kochi-Mangaluru Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation tomorrow

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Kochi – Mangaluru Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation tomorrow via video conferencing. The event marks an important milestone towards the creation of One Nation One Gas Grid.
  • The 450 kilometre long pipeline has been built by GAIL (India) Limited. It has transportation capacity of 12 Million Metric Standard Cubic Metres per day.
  • The total cost of the project was about three thousand crore rupees and its construction created over 12 lakh man-days of employment.
  • The pipeline will supply environment friendly and affordable fuel in the form of Piped Natural Gas, PNG to households and Compressed Natural Gas, CNG to the transportation sector. It will also supply Natural Gas to commercial and industrial units across the districts along the pipeline. Consumption of cleaner fuel will help in improving air quality by curbing air pollution.

 

4. India begins its two-year tenure as Non-Permanent Member of UNSC

  • India began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from Jan 1st, 2021. This is the eight-time that India will have a seat in the powerful organ of the United Nations.
  • Four other nations – Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway have also begun their 2-year terms at the UNSC.
  • India will be the UNSC President in August 2021 and again for a month in 2022. The presidency of the council is rotated among each of the members for one month according to alphabetical order.
  • India has been at the forefront of calls to initiate reforms in the UN Security Council to further expand to make it more representative of the world’s interests.

5. Former Union Minister Buta Singh passes away

  • Former Union Minister Buta Singh passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi today. He was 86.
  • The senior leader was in a coma since October last year after he suffered a brain hemorrhage.
  • Mr Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha eight-times. He served as Union Home Minister, Minister for Agriculture, Parliamentary Affairs, Civil Supplies, Housing, Shipping, Transport and Sports.
  • President, Vice President and Prime Minister have expressed grief on his demise.
