1. India to begin world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination drive from Jan 16

  • The COVID-19 vaccination drive in India will commence on Jan 16.
  • Priority will be given to the frontline, healthcare workers who are estimated to be around three crores. They will be followed by those who are above 50 years and under 50 population groups with any form of co-morbidities. Their number is around 27 crores.
  • PM Modi will also interact with the Chief Ministers of all states today evening through video conferencing. During the interaction, the COVID-19 situation and the vaccination rollout will be discussed.
  • For the drive, more than 2 lakh vaccinators, 61,000 programme managers and 3.7 lakh team members have been trained. They are trained as part of training at district, state and block levels.

2. Elon Musk becomes world’s richest person, overtakes Jeff Bezos

  • Elon Musk has become the world’s richest person, surpassing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which ranks the world’s 500 wealthiest people.
  • Musk, who is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla has a net worth of $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos.
  • According to Forbes real-time billionaires list, Elon Musk remains at the second position behind Jeff Bezos with a net worth of around $177.2 billion, while Bezos has $184.6 billion.


3. National Youth Festival to be organized from January 12

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organizing a week long National Youth Festival from the 12th of this month.
  • This year the festival has been organised in virtual mode and talent from every state has been included.
  • The competitive events include competitive and non-competitive cultural events, martial arts, exhibitions, intellectual discourses, young artists camps, seminars and adventure programmes.
  • National Youth Awards will also be presented during this festival.

4. Joe Biden names two Indian Americans in National Security Council of White House

  • US President-elect Joe Biden has appointed two Indian-Americans to the National Security Council of the White House.
  • Biden has named Indian-American Sumona Guha as senior director for South Asia and Tarun Chhabra as senior director for Technology and National Security.
  • Sumona Guha is currently serving as senior vice president at Albright Stonebridge Group whereas Tarun Chhabra is a senior fellow at the Centre for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University.
  • Biden has also named Shanthi Kalathil as Coordinator for Democracy and Human Rights in his National Security Council.

5. India to chair three-key subsidiary bodies of UNSC

  • India will be chairing three-key subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
  • The panels are Counter-Terrorism Committee (for 2022), Taliban Sanctions Committee and Libya Sanctions committee.
  • This was announced by the Permanent Representative of India at the UNSC, TS Tirumurti.
  • India will chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee of UNSC in 2022.
  • Taliban Sanctions Committee has always been a high priority for India keeping in mind its strong interest and commitment to peace, security, development and progress of Afghanistan.
