1. President Ram Nath Kovind to address the nation on eve of 74th Independence Day today

  • President Ram Nath Kovind will address the nation on the eve of the 74th Independence Day today.
  • The address will be broadcast from 7 PM onwards on the entire national network of All India Radio and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in Hindi followed by the English version.
  • All India Radio will broadcast regional language versions of the President’s Address from 9.30 PM on its respective regional networks.
  • Prime Minister will unfurl the National Flag and address the nation from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort on 15th August.

2. Retail inflation rises to 6.93% in July from 6.23% in June

  • Retail inflation rose to 6.93 per cent in July, mainly on account of higher prices of food items.
    As per the government data released, the food inflation, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data,
  • increased to 9.62 per cent in July. The retail inflation in June was 6.23 per cent, while the food inflation stood at 8.72 per cent.
  • It is for the second consecutive month that the retail inflation has been above the RBI’s comfort level to restrict the inflation at 4 per cent (plus, minus two per cent).
  • The central bank mainly factors in retail inflation while arriving at its bi-monthly monetary policy.

3. India announces USD 500 million assistance for major connectivity project in Maldives

  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that the Indian government will fund the implementation of major connectivity project in the Maldives with USD 400 million line of credit and USD 100 million grant.
  • The announcement was made after the Union External Affairs Minister had wide-ranging talks with Abdulla Shahid, his Maldivian counterpart.
  • As per the officials, the 6.7 km Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) will be the largest civilian infrastructure project in the Maldives, which will connect Male with three neighbouring islands- Gulhifahu, Villingili, Thilafushi.

4. US Prez Trump announces historic peace deal between UAE, Israel

  • US President Donald Trump announced that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic relations as part of a new peace deal.
  • Making the announcement in the Oval Office, US President said, the deal is a significant step towards building a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous Middle East.
  • The UAE and Israel plan to exchange embassies and ambassadors and begin cooperation on a broad range of areas including tourism, education, healthcare, trade and security.

5. Rajnath Singh launches Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) through an online webinar.
  • The NIIO puts in place dedicated structures for the end users to interact with academia and industry towards fostering innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in defence.
  • The Draft Defence Acquisition Policy 2020 (DAP 20) rolled out by the Defence Ministry last month envisaged establishment of Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation by the Service Headquarters.


6. Sports Ministry to organise ‘Fit India Freedom Run’ from Aug 15- Oct 2

  • The Sports Ministry will organise the largest country-wide run, the Fit India Freedom Run from 15th August till 2nd of October.
  • The event is organized to encourage fitness among the masses while following Covid-19 protocols. Individuals and organizations can register for the event on the Fit India website.
  • In keeping with the current pandemic situation and social distancing norms, the government has decided to encourage participants of the event to run at their own pace – anywhere and at any time of their convenience.
