1. PM Modi to launch country wide COVID-19 vaccination drive on Jan 16

  • PM Narendra Modi will launch the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination program on Jan 16 through video conferencing.
  • On this occasion, he will launch the Co-WIN COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network app. It is a digital platform for the real-time monitoring of vaccine distribution and delivery.
  • He is also likely to interact with some of the health workers virtually who will be receiving the shots on the first day.
  • On the first day of the countrywide COVID-19 vaccination drive, around 3 lakh health care workers will get the vaccine shots at 2,934 sites and each vaccination session will be catering to a maximum of 100 beneficiaries.

2. Cabinet approves MoU between India, UAE for scientific and technical cooperation

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to the MoU on scientific and technical cooperation between National Centre of Meteorology of the United Arab Emirates and Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • The MoU will enable sharing of knowledge, data and operational products for meteorological, seismological and oceanic services between both the countries.
  • It will facilitate exchange of scientific and technical information, deployment of Meteorological observation networks over ocean, mutual cooperation in the development of special capacities and research of Tsunami models for faster and more reliable forecasts.

3. US President elect Joe Biden unveils 1.9 trillion dollar Coronavirus relief package

  • US President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled a 1.9 trillion dollar Coronavirus emergency relief package.
  • The stimulus plan underscores Biden’s intent to aggressively shore up the deteriorating economy and address the devastation wrought by the pandemic.
  • It is designed to provide another infusion of federal aid for families, businesses and local govts confronting a surge of Covid cases.
  • Biden has set a goal of administering 100 million vaccine shots in the first 100 days after he takes office on Jan 20. The US govt has approved two different vaccines for emergency use.


4. Union Budget 2021-22 to be paperless for first time ever since Independence

  • In a historic first, the Union Budget 2021-22 will be paperless since Independence amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Generally, the Budget is printed every year by around 100 employees who stay together for about 15 days till the Budget is presented formally.
  • However this year, the hard copies will not be printed considering the Covid-19 pandemic and rather the soft copies will be shared.

5. Education Minister recommends setting up task force for NEP implementation

  • Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal recommended setting up of a task force to coordinate the implementation of the National Education Policy between educational institutions.
  • The Minister suggested the formation of a review committee and an implementation committee headed by Higher Education Secretary to ensure speedy implementation of NEP.
  • The Minister further emphasised on the need to shift the focus from package culture to patent culture. He called upon the stakeholders to ensure synergy between NEP implementation and the existing government policies.
