1. Centre and World Bank sign USD 500 million project to build Green National Highway Corridors

  • The Centre and the World Bank signed a USD 500 million project to build safe and green national highway corridors in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.
  • The project will enhance the capacity of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in putting safety and green technologies.
  • The Green National Highways Corridors Project will support the Road Transport and Highways Ministry to construct 783 kilometres of highways in various geographies by integrating safe and green technology designs.
  • The project will also help reduce GHG emissions in the construction and maintenance of highways.

2. Health Ministry issues SOPs for surveillance, response to new COVID-19 variant detected

  • The Union Health Ministry issued standard operation procedure (SOPs) for the surveillance and response to the newly discovered mutated variant of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom.
  • The Ministry noted that the new variant of SARS-CoV2 virus is more transmissible and is affecting the younger population.
  • The mutation has made the virus more infectious and is spreading easily between people.
  • Under the latest SOPs, the Ministry describes the activities to be undertaken at the entry point and in the community for all international passengers who have either travelled from or transitted through the UK in the last 4 weeks.

 

3. Sports Minister virtually inaugurates 8 Khelo India State Centres of Excellence across India

  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju virtually inaugurated 8 Khelo India State Centres of Excellence across India in the presence of State Sports Ministers.
  • The 8 States include Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Kerala, Telangana, Nagaland, Karnataka and Odisha.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rijiju said, this is a very important day for sports in India and it is a very important beginning to develop sports culture and excellence in the country.

4. Central Bank of India launches ‘RuPay Select’ Contactless Debit Card

  • In association with the National Payments Corporation of India, Central Bank of India has launched a variant of a contactless debit card – ‘RuPay Select’.
  • The RuPay Debit Select Card will focus on customers’ lifestyle, fitness, rejuvenation, nutrition and personal care.
  • Central Bank RuPay Select Debit cardholders will be able to avail complimentary membership and concessional access to golf courses, gyms, spas and restaurants.
  • These cards also come with features such as facilitating offline transactions in both transits as well as retail purchases.

5. National Mathematics Day: 22nd Dec

  • India observes the National Mathematics Day every year on 22nd December since 2012 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
  • The day was announced on 26th Feb 2012 by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 Dec 1887- 26 Apr 1920).
  • Ramanujan was one of the youngest members of Britain’s Royal Society and the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge University.
