1. Kargil Vijay Diwas: 26th July

  • In order to commemorate India’s win in the war, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated annually on July 26. On this occasion, PM Narendra Modi paid tributes and recalled the valour of the Indian armed forces while saying the enemy perched atop heights was defeated by brave soldiers.
  • During the war, the Indian Army evicted Pakistani intruders and succeeded in recapturing Tiger Hill and other posts as a part of ‘Operation Vijay’.
  • Indian soldiers had secured this victory after a three-month conflict that led to a loss of nearly 490 officers, soldiers, and jawans lives from the Indian side.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate 3 new ICMR labs today

  • PM Narendra will inaugurate three new high-throughput labs of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) today through video conferencing.
  • The three new high-throughput ICMR labs have been constructed in Mumbai, Noida and Kolkata. The labs will majorly boost the nation’s COVID-19 testing capacity.
  • The Union Government has adopted the test-track-treat strategy for early detection and containment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under this, the ICMR has ramped up its testing capabilities to effectively deal with Coronavirus crisis.

3. Haryana to host 4th Khelo India Youth Games

  • Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar and the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju announced that Haryana will host the 4th edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG). The games are currently scheduled to take place after Tokyo Olympics.
  • Through a video conference, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that 2021 Khelo India Youth Games will be held in Panchkula in Haryana.
  • Khelo India Youth Games usually take place in January every year; however, it was delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All the states with over 10,000 participants will take part in the games.

4. Kashmir Saffron gets Geographical Indication Tag

  • The Union Government has issued a certificate of GI registration for Saffron grown in the Kashmir Valley. With the GI tag, Kashmir Saffron will acquire more prominence in the export market and would help the farmers get a better remunerative price.
  • The GI certification establishes specific geographical origin and certifies certain unique qualities of the product and enables those who have the right to use sign in order to prevent third parties using the sign.
  • The GI certification would also stop the prevalent adulteration of Kashmir Saffron and thereby authenticated Saffron will fetch much better prices.

GI tags are issued as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. This tag is issued by the Geographical Indication Registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.


5. India announces 400 million dollar currency swap for Sri Lanka

  • Reserve Bank of India has signed necessary documents for extending a 400 million dollar currency swap facility with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This currency swap arrangement will remain available till November 2022.
  • The agreement followed talks between the two sides over past weeks to find ways of enhancing economic cooperation.
  • Prime Minister Modi had assured that India would continue to provide all possible support to Sri Lanka for mitigating the effects of the pandemic. Sri Lanka has around one billion dollar loan commitment from India and has requested to reschedule the payment due to ongoing financial crisis and COVID situation.

6. Maldives celebrates 55th Independence Day

  • Maldives celebrates its 55th Independence Day on 26th President Ramnath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their greetings to the neighbouring country on the occasion. Both leaders have written to Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih conveying their greetings and assuring continued support to development and democracy in Maldives.
  • Indian high commission in Male while extending its greetings said India will continue to support post-COVID economic recovery in Maldives and additional financial assistance will be announced soon.
  • The Indian high commission on the occasion has organised a photo exhibition depicting milestone events between the two neighbours. This year also marks 55 years of establishment of diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives.
