1. UK PM Boris Johnson cancels trip to India

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled his scheduled trip to India to be the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade.
  • The UK Prime Minister spoke to PM Narendra Modi to express his regret that he would be unable to visit India as it was important for him to stay back in the UK to focus on the battle against the COVID-19.
  • The Prime Minister took the decision a day after he announced a national lockdown in Britain to tackle the spread of a new mutated variant of coronavirus.


2. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launches Freight Business Development Portal

  • Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launched a Freight Business Development Portal as one stop solution for all the needs of freight customers.
  • It is designed in order to replace physical processes with online ones to minimise the need of human-to-human interaction.
  • The new portal will be game changer in ensuring the ease of doing business with Railways.
  • The personalised dashboard of the portal provides customers a view with their business in railways, outstanding indents, on-run consignments, status of various interactions and facility to apply for various services and raising concerns, among others.


3. Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech jointly pledge smooth rollout of COVID-19 vaccines

  • The Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech jointly communicated their pledge for the smooth rollout of COVID-19 vaccines to India and the world.
  • Adar Poonawala and Dr. Krishna Ella, on behalf of the two companies communicated their combined intent to develop, manufacture and supply the COVID-19 vaccines.
  • They said that the most important task ahead of them is saving lives and assured that both the companies are fully engaged in this activity to ensure a smooth rollout of vaccines.

4. UP government to launch ‘Kisan Kalyan Mission’ today

  • The govt of Uttar Pradesh will launch a special program named ‘Kisan Kalyan Mission’ today to double the income of farmers of the state.
  • The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath will launch the mission from Sarojininagar development block of Lucknow.
  • Under the program, farmer meetings will be organized in which scientists, progressive farmers, and the workers associated with the Agriculture Department will be explaining scientific farming. They will also provide information about the schemes of the government.
  • Many departments of the state government such as Horticulture, Mandi Parishad, animal husbandry, sugarcane food and supply, fisheries and Panchayati Raj will be working together.

5. Alexander Ellis appointed new British high commissioner to India

  • Alexander Ellis has been appointed as the next British High Commissioner to India. He will be succeeding Philip Barton.
  • He will be taking up the key role later this month, the British foreign office announced.
  • Ellis, 53, has held several posts including the Deputy National Security Adviser for the Integrated Review on diplomacy, development and defence in January 2020.
  • Before this, he was the Director-General in the Department for Exiting the European Union for three years.
