1. US Congress confirms Joe Biden’s victory as next US President with 306 votes

  • The US Congress has confirmed Joe Biden’s Victory as the next President of the United States.
  • Vice-President Mike Pence, who as president of the Senate oversaw the certification process, confirmed to Congress that of the 538 Electoral College votes cast, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris received 306 whereas Donald Trump and Mike Pence received 232.
  • The US Capitol building hosts both Houses of the US Parliament – US Senate and the House of Representatives.

2. 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention to be organized on 9th Jan in virtual format

  • The 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention is being organized on 9th Jan virtually in the backdrop of COVID pandemic.
  • The theme of the Convention this year is “Contributing to Atma Nirbhar Bharat”.
  • The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi and will feature a keynote address by the Chief Guest Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of Suriname.
  • The Inaugural session will be followed by the two plenary sessions.
  • The winners of the online ‘Bharat ko Janiye Quiz’ for the youth and Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awardees for 2020-21 will also be announced.

3. Second nationwide dry run of Covid-19 vaccination drive to be held today

  • The second nationwide dry run on the Covid 19 vaccination will be held today.
  • The massive mock drill will be held in 736 districts across 33 States and Union Territories.
  • The objective of this dry run is to simulate the actual vaccine administration event. The entire planning of the vaccination drive including beneficiary registration, microplanning and vaccination at the planned session site will be tested under the leadership of District Collector or District Magistrate.

The first mock drill was conducted across 125 districts covering all states and union territories on Jan 2nd.

 

4. India’s GDP may contract by 7.7% in FY21, says govt

  • India may see a real GDP (gross domestic product) contraction of 7.7% in the 2020-21 financial year as compared to the growth rate of 4.2% in 2019-20.
  • As per the first advanced estimates of the national income released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), there was contraction in almost all sectors with the exception of agriculture.
  • The economy contracted 23.9 percent in the first quarter and 7.5 percent in the second quarter.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last month projected the Indian economy to contract by 7.5% in FY21.

 

5. Claire Polosak becomes first female match official in men’s Test match

  • Australia’s Claire Polosak created history by becoming the first female match official to officiate a men’s Test match.
  • She took up the fourth umpire’s role in the third Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
  • The 32-year-old already has the distinction of being the first woman on-field umpire in a men’s ODI match in ICC’s Division 2 league between Namibia and Oman.
  • Polosak’s international umpiring career began in 2015 with appointment to the ICC Women’s T20 Qualifying tournament in Thailand. This led to appointment to the Women’s T20 World Cup in India.
