1. EIU’s Global Democracy Index: India slips 10 spots to 51st rank

  • The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has recently released a global democracy index for the year 2019 in which India has slipped 10 ranks to 51st position citing “erosion of civil liberties” in the country as the primary cause for the downtrend.
  • This index provides an overall view of the status of democracy among 167 countries and is based on five categories, i.e., electoral process and pluralism; the functioning of government; political participation; political culture; and civil liberties.
  • The global democracy index helps business leaders to empower them to work with confidence and to prepare for more opportunities.
  • Norway tops the list followed by Iceland and Sweden while North Korea is at the bottom at the 167th position.
  • Meanwhile, China’s score fell to 2.26 in the 2019 index, and the country is now ranked 153rd, close to the bottom of the global rankings.
  • India was included in the “flawed democracy” category.

2. National Girl Child Day

  • This day is celebrated on January 24 every year across the country to provide maximum support and facilities to the girls of the country in every respect and to raise awareness about discrimination against girls.
  • It was initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India.
  • There are three major objectives to celebrate National Girl Child Day.
  1. To raise awareness about the rights of girls.
  2. To talk about various atrocities and inequalities that girls face in their daily lives.
  3. To increase awareness about the importance of girl education, nutrition, and health.

3. Maharashtra retains Khelo India Youth Games champions’ trophy

  • Maharashtra retained first place in the Khelo India Youth Games champions trophy 2020 with a rich collection of 256 medals, including 78 gold.
  • Haryana came second with 200 medals (68 gold, 60 silver, 72 bronze), followed by Delhi at third with 122 medals (39 gold, 36 silver, 47 bronze).
  • After 13 days of intense competition, Maharashtra won its second Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) trophy in a row by grabbing 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze medals.
  • West Bengal, Gujarat and Punjab completed the list of top 10 states on the medals table.

4. ISRO’s Gaganyaan to carry lady robot ‘Vyomamitra’ to space!

  • Before the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sends a man into space next year in its first manned-mission Gaganyaan, it will send two unmanned missions to space in December this year and June next year.
  • The first unmanned mission will, however, have a half humanoid called ‘Vyomamitra’, a ‘lady’ robot.
  • The robot was the highlight at the ‘Human Spaceflight and Exploration – Present Challenges and Future Trends’ symposium.
  • The robot Vyomamitra can monitor through module parameters, perform life support operations and switch panel operations.

4. President Kovind confers RashtriyaBal Puraskar awards to children

  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, 2020 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The Bal Puraskar is given by the government every year to recognize exceptional achievements of children in various fields.
  • These fields are innovation, scholastic achievements, social service, arts and culture, sports and bravery.
  • The 22 children who were selected for National Bravery Awards also received the awards from the President.
  • The award carries a medal, cash prize of one lakh rupees, a certificate and citation.


 5. Subhash Chandra Bose 123rd Birth Anniversary 2020

  • India is celebrating the 123rd birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23, 2020.
  • Chandra Bose is known for the establishment of the Azad Hind Fauj or Indian National Army (INA).
  • He was elected as the President of Congress in 1939 but expelled due to his differences with Congress’s policy.
  • Nation pays a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on this occasion and several cultural programs held across the country in his respect.
  • In 1921, Bose met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time and called him Father of the Nation.
  • One of his famous quotes was, ‘Tum Mujhe Khoon Do, Main Tumhe Azadi Dunga.’

6. Greece elects its first female President

  • Greece’s parliament elected Katerina Sakellaropoulou as the first woman president.
  • The 63-year-old was elected to the top post in a historic vote, which saw 261 of the total 294 MPs vote in favour of her. Until now, she was serving as the first woman head of Greece’s top administrative court, the Council of State.
  • Katerina will succeed Prokopis Pavlopoulos, whose 5-year term is scheduled to end in March.
  • Katerina Sakellaropoulou’s election is expected to unite the country’s polarised political systems, as she does not belong to anyone political party.
