National Voters’ Day 2020

  • India observes “National Voters’ Day” on 25th January every year to mark the formation of Election Commission.
  • The theme for 2020 is – ‘Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy’.
  • The Day was celebrated for the first time on January 25, 2011.
  • The Election Commission of India was established on 25th Jan, 1950 with an aim to conduct Union and State elections in India and to identify all eligible voters whose age has turned 18 on January 1 every year in all polling booth areas across the country.
  • Any Indian citizen of 18 years can vote in all kinds of democratic elections in India only if his/her name is included in the electoral list. If the name has been removed from the voter list for any reason, voters can’t cast a vote even if it has a voter ID. If a person becomes a citizen of another country then he/she loses all voting rights in India.

Global Corruption Perception Index

  • Transparency International has launched Corruption Perception Index 2019 during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos providingranks to 180 countries according to their levels of public sector corruption.
  • The index uses a scale from 0 to 100, where score 0 indicates a highly corrupted country whereas number 100 indicates corruption-free country.
  • India slipped two positions to 80th in the index with a total score of 40 while it was at 78th in the previous year’s ranking.
  • Denmark and New Zealand topped the index as they are the most honest countries.
  • The most perceived corrupt country in the world is Somalia and the bottom countries are Syria, South Sudan.

India’s first e-waste clinic opens in Bhopal

  • India’s first e-waste clinic is being inaugurated by the Union Environment Secretary in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh that would enable segregation, processing and disposal of waste from both household and commercial units.
  • The e- waste clinic is jointly set up by the Central Pollution Control Board-CPCB and Bhopal Municipal Corporation-BMC in junk low floor bus. The bus is decorated with e-waste material from outside and inside. A TV has been also installed in it, in which documentary films on the subject of environmental damage caused by e-waste will be shown.
  • The e-waste clinic is being started on the basis of a three-month pilot project. If this project is successful, e-waste clinics will be established at other places in the country.
  • BMC official informed that electronic waste will be collected door-to-door or could be deposited directly at the e-waste clinic.

Republic Day ceremony to start from War Memorial from this year

  • This year for the first time Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay wreath at the National War Memorial and not the India Gatewhere he will be received by the Chief of Defence Staff and the three services chiefs.
  • Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, Army chief General M. Naravane, Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh and Air Force chief Air Marshal R K S Bhadauria will stand behind Modi when he pays homage to the dead soldiers.
  • On March 27 last year, India became only the fourth country to successfully fire an Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) missile under a project named Mission Shakti.
  • Demonstrating this prowess, the A-SAT missile will feature in the parade this Republic Day.

India successfully phased out most potent ozone-depleting chemical

  • India has successfully phased out one of the most potent ozone-depleting chemicals- Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-141 b from the foam manufacturing process by January 1, 2020.
  • The HCFC-141 b chemical is one most potent depleting substance after Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and is generally used by foam manufacturers as a blowing agent in the production of rigid polyurethane (PU) foams.
  • India imposed a ban on the import of HCFC-141b on December 31, 2019under Ozone Depleting Substances (Regulation and Control) Amendment Rules, 2019 issued under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  • India is among the few countries that aim to use technologies, which have a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and are non-ozone depleting. And India is first at this scale among developing countries.
  • The complete phase-out of HCFC-141b will assist in the healing of the stratospheric ozone layer and also boost the efforts to fight climate change, as all the form manufacturing companies will turn towards low global warming potential alternative technologies.


Global Talent Competitive Index 2020

  • INSEAD Business School released theGlobal Talent Competitive Index (GTCI)2020 with the help of Google and Adecco Group.
  • The index shows the ability of countries to make the world progress, retain and attract talent. They are ranked based on their abilities.
  • India jumped eight ranks securing the 72nd rank in the index.
  • Switzerland secured the first position while the USA is on second and Singapore got third place.
  • China ranked 42nd, Russia at 48th, Brazil secured 80th while South Africa grabbed the 70th position in the list.
  • GTCI gives ranking based on six indicators – attract, retain, enable, grow, vocational skills and global knowledge skills.
