1. India celebrates its 71st Republic Day – Key Highlights

  • India celebrated its 71st Republic Day on January 26, 2020 and showcased our strength, diversity and pride, viz., “Unity in Diversity”.
  • President of Brazil, Mr. Jair Messias Bolsonaro was the Chief Guest at the Parade this year.
  • This year, for the first time, the wreath laying ceremony was held at the newly built National War Memorial instead of Amar Jawan Jyoti beneath the India Gate arch.
  • For the first time, a contingent of women bikers of CRPF performed daredevil stunts commanded by Inspector Seema Nag, who is posted with the Rapid Action Force (RAF).
  • At the Republic Parade, for the first time, newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat attended the Republic Day parade.
  • Captain Tanya Shergil, a fourth generation Army Officer led an all-male marching contingent of the Indian Army Corps of Signals.
  • Another key highlight of the Parade was inclusion of the Dhanush artillery gun for the first time.
  • The Republic Day Parade 2020 included a total of 22 tableaux including 16 from various states and union territories and remaining 6 from various ministries, departments and the National Disaster Response Force.
  • Gujarat presented a tableau based on the unique theme of Rani kiVav – Jal Mandir located in Patan city.
  • Meghalaya presented a tableau centred on the replica of Umshiang double decker living Root Bridge.
  • Punjab’s tableau was based on the theme of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev’s teachings of three principles — KiratKaro, NaamJapo and VandChhako.
  • Rajasthan was based on the theme of JaaliJharokha, through which the state will showcase glory of heritage of buildings and sites of Jaipur city.
  • For the first time, Jammu and Kashmir, participated in the Republic Day Parade as a Union Territory whose tableau was based on theme of ”Back to Village” programme, which was launched by the government to rehabilitate the displaced Kashmiri Pandits.
  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) participated in the Republic Day for the first time this yearwhose tableau was based on showcasing cutting-edge technology and instruments used by the force to carry out daring rescue operations in flood-hit and disaster hit areas.
  • Finance Ministry’s tableau was based on the theme of ‘Financial Inclusion’ and Ministry of Commerce and Industries presented its tableau based on the theme of ‘Startups: Reach for the Sky’.
  • The major attraction was fly-past by the newly inducted Chinook and Apache helicopters along with Sukhoiand advanced light helicopters.
  • Anti-satellite weapons – Mission Shakti, Army’s battle tank Bhishma were also showcased during the 90-minute long parade.



2. Government announces 141 Padma Awards on occasion of 71st Republic Day

  • The government has announced 141 Padma Awards for this year on the occasion of 71st Republic Day. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhusan and 118 Padma Shri awards.
  • Padma Vibhushan 2020 winnersinclude George Fernandes (Posthumous), Arun Jaitley (Posthumous), former Prime Minister of Mauritius AneroodJugnauth, Mary Kom, Chhannulal Mishra, Sushma Swaraj (posthumous) and PejavaraAdhokhajaMathaUdupi (Posthumous).
  • Padma Bhushan 2020 Winnersare – M. Mumtaz Ali, Muazzam Ali (posthumously), Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Ajay Chakraborty, Manoj Das, Balakrishna Doshi, KrishnammalJagannathan, Former Nagaland Chief Minister SC Jamir, Uttarakhand’s well-known environmentalist and social worker Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi, Dr. TseringLandol, eminent industrialist Anand Mahindra, Neelakanta Ramakrishna MadhavaMenon (Posthumous), former Union Minister Manohar Parrikar (Posthumous), Prof. Jagdish Seth, Olympian badminton player PV Sindhu and industrialist VenuSrinivasan.

3. Bharat Parv 2020 begins at Red fort ground in New Delhi

  • Bharat Parv 2020, the programme to celebrate the spirit of India, begins at Red fort ground in New Delhi and will be on till 31st January.
  • The objective of Bharat Parv is to encourage people to visit different tourism places of the country and to inculcate the spirit of ‘Dekho Apna Desh’.
  • The Tourism Ministry has said that the theme of this year’s Bharat Parv is Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat and celebrating‘150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi’.
  • The Parv has many attractions for public including display of Tableaux of the Republic Day parade, performance by armed forces bands and cultural Performances from different regions of the country.


4. Tribal Affairs Ministry proposes 6th Schedule Area status to Ladakh

  • The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has recommended the Central Government to declare Ladakh as a tribal area under the 6th Schedule of Indian constitution.
  • Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said that his ministry has sent the proposal to the Union Home Ministryto enrich and preserve the legacy of Ladakh.
  • The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution deals with the administration of the tribal areas in the four northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.
  • The people of Ladakh want to get tribal status so that people from other parts of the country do not come and settle there. It will also protect their demographic recognition.

5. Kobe Bryant dies in helicopter crash

  • American basketball player Kobe Bryant killed in a helicopter crash in the American province of California.
  • Kobe Bryant was known as the greatest player in the basketball world.
  • Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria has also died in the accident.
  • Kobe Bryant played 20 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and won five championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010).
  • Bryant was announced the most valuable player of the NBA in 2008.
  • He was awarded NBA all-star player for a record 18 times.

6. West Bengal emerges at the top in vegetable production

  • According to horticulture production data released by the Central government, West Bengal has emerged as the top state in the country in vegetable production in 2018-19 that witnessed a production of 29.55 million tonne (MT) of vegetables
  • Uttar Pradesh was in the second place with 27.71 million tonne of vegetable production in the same period.
  • In 2017-18, West Bengal was in the second place with 27.70 MT of vegetable production while UP held the top position with a production of 28.32 MT.
  • Andhra Pradesh continued to hold on to the pole position in fruits with 17.61 mt, followed by Maharashtra (10.82 mt) and UP (10.65 mt).
