1. Cabinet approves setting-up country’s 13th major port

  • The Union Cabinet gave approval for the establishment of a new major port at Vadhavan, Maharashtra.
  • The Vadhavan port will be developed on the ‘Landlord Model’. And it caters to the needs of Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Telangana and secondary enclaves of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, NCR, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
  • A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be set up to provide the necessary infrastructure including land reclamation, construction of the breakwater, besides establishing connectivity with the interstate.
  • The development of the Vadhavan port will house the container ships of 16,000 to 25,000 TEU capacities.
  • India will join the top 10 container port countries in the world after the development of the Vadhavan port.

2. Cooperative Banks to come under RBI regulation

  • The Union Cabinet approved amendments to the Banking Regulation Act to bring cooperative banks under the regulatory mechanism of Reserve Bank of India to ensure greater accountability and transparency in the functioning of cooperative banks.
  • The government has taken this move in the wake of the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank crisis.
  • As per the new proposals, cooperative banks will need to take RBI approval for the appointment of CEO and do audits as per RBI guidelines.
  • The cooperative banks will now be required to fulfill regulatory requirements that have been set for scheduled commercial banks that will help prevent malpractices.
  • The Reserve Bank of India had imposed restrictions on the operation of the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) bank in September 2019.

3. Indore to host 21st edition of IIFA Awards

  • The 21st edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA Awards) will be held in Indore from 27th March to 29th March as announced by IIFA organisers in the presence of Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath at a press conference.
  • For the first time, Salman Khan will host the ceremony and RiteishDeshmukhwill co-host the show.
  • An event related to the IIFA Awards will be held in Bhopal on March 21, while the main function spanning over three days will be organised in Indore from March 27-29.

4. Shaktikanta Das named ‘Central Banker of the Year 2020 – Asia Pacific’

  • Shaktikanta Das, the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been named ‘Central Banker of the Year 2020 – Asia-Pacific’ by The Banker Magazine.
  • The Banker is a London-based international financial affairs publication owned by The Financial Times.It is known for its annual rankings of the world’s top banks.
  • He has brought in measures to tighten the rules around shadow banking, refusing to bail out non-banking financial companies (NBFC). He is aiming instead for issues to be managed within the financial system, possible a risky move but one that will reduce dependence on the central bank,” the magazine said.
  • The magazine lauded the governor for setting up a college for supervisors, and mandating banks to select external benchmarks for linking their lending rates.
  • The 2020 list “celebrates the officials that have best managed to stimulate growth and stabilise their economy”.

5. Vivad Se Vishwas bill tabled in Lok Sabha

  • TheDirect Tax Vivad Se Vishwas Bill, 2020 tabled in the Lok Sabha on February 5, 2020. The bill aims to resolve disputes related to direct tax payments and to settle the huge number of pending direct tax cases.
  • The Vivad se Vishwas scheme was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her budget speech on February 1, 2020.
  • The scheme offers a complete waiver on interest and penalty to the taxpayers who pay their pending taxes by March 31 and benefit those whose tax demands are locked in dispute in multiple forums.
  • If a taxpayer is not able to pay direct taxes by March 31st then, he will get further time till June 30th. However, in that case, he would have to pay 10 percent more on the tax.
  • In case it is just the interest and the penalty which is being disputed, the taxpayer will have to pay 25 percent of the disputed amount till March 31, after which, it will be 30 per cent.

The Vivad se Vishwas scheme is similar to the ‘Indirect Tax, Sabka Vishwas’ scheme, which was introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her maiden budget presentation in July 2019 which was aimed at reducing disputes related to excise and service tax payments.

 

6. Deepa Malik Elected President of Paralympic Committee of India

  • Accomplished Para-athlete and India’s sole woman Paralympic medallist Deepa Malik has been selected as president of Paralympic Committee of India though the results of the elections are subject to a pending case in the Delhi High Court.
  • Deepa Malik won silver in shot-put in the Rio Paralympic Games. And she is also a Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee as well as Padma Shri recipient.
  • She has also won silver in the IPC World Championships in 2011 in the shot put F 52-53 event. Besides getting silver each in discus and javelin throw events in the Asian Games in Indonesia in 2018.
