1. Indigenously built ASW stealth corvette INS Kavaratti to be commissioned into Navy today

  • The last of four indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvettes INS Kavaratti will be commissioned into the Indian Navy by Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Naravane, at Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam today.
  • Kavaratti is indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house organization, Directorate of Naval Design and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
  • The ship will be commissioned into the Navy as a combat-ready platform as the ship has completed sea trials of all the systems fitted onboard.
  • With the induction, the Indian Navy preparedness will be enhanced.

2. ‘COVIRAP’ developed by researchers at IIT Kharagpur gets ICMR certification

  • ‘COVIRAP’, the diagnostic technology developed by researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has been successfully validated for its efficacy in COVID-19 detection by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • ‘COVIRAP’ has been designed to be fairly easy to conduct and affordable as well and can produce results within one hour.
  • This new testing method implements a highly reliable and accurate molecular diagnostic procedure that can be conducted in an ultra-low-cost portable device unit.
  • The test results are rendered via a custom-made mobile application for dissemination without requiring manual interpretation.

3. India to host third India-US 22 Ministerial Dialogue on Oct 27

  • India will be hosting the third India-US 22 Ministerial Dialogue on 27th October in New Delhi.
  • United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence Mark T. Esper will be visiting India to participate in the dialogue.
  • From the Indian side, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will lead the delegation.
  • The agenda for the third dialogue will cover all bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

4. Union Cabinet approves bonus for central government employees

  • Union Cabinet has approved the bonus for central government employees for 2019-2020, a move which is expected to benefit over 30 lakh employees.
  • Under the approval, the Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) will be paid to more than 16 lakh non-gazetted employees including those working in Railways, Defence, EPFO and ESIC.
  • The total cost to the exchequer will be 3,737 crore, the minister said after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The money will be given in a single installment before Vijaya Dashami so that it would encourage spending and boost the economy.


5. Government imposes ban on sale of natural gas, coal-bed methane to self

  • The government has banned natural gas and coal-bed methane (CBM) producers from buying their own produce in the newly notified gas marketing freedom guidelines.
  • The ban implies that from now onwards producers of natural gas/ CMB will not be able to buy their own products.
  • The government notified the Natural Gas Marketing Reforms that give producers the freedom to discover the market price of gas through a standard e-bidding process.
