News Of The Day – Bulandshahr police officer’s killing case : 28 Dec 2018
News of the Day – Police said they are still questioning Prashant Natt on who killed Sumit Singh, the protester who was also shot dead during the violence.
The Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday arrested Prashant Natt, who they claimed shot dead officer Subodh Kumar Singh during the mob violence in Bulandshahr earlier this month.
Superintendent of Police (City) Bulandshahr, Atul Srivastava said Natt shot dead Singh with the officer’s own service weapon after snatching it from him.
However, Mr. Srivastava said they they were still questioning Natt on who killed Sumit Singh, the protester, during the violence. In some videos, he was seen among stone-throwers during the attack on the Chingravati police outpost.
Singh was shot dead during the mob violence that erupted in the Syana area of Bulandshahr on December 3 after right-wing groups alleged cow slaughter and brought the carcasses to the police outpost in a tractor- trolley. He was allegedly assaulted by the mob after he was cornered in a field.
Mr. Srivastava said Natt had confessed to his involvement in the incident and firing the bullet that killed Singh.
Station House Officer Subodh Singh was shot near his left eyebrow with a .32 bore weapon, the police had earlier said on the basis of the autopsy report.
He was the investigating officer in the 2015 Mohammad Akhlaq lynching case in Dadri.
The police had earlier identified Army jawan Jeetu Fauji as a suspect in the murder case. Bajrang Dal activist Yogesh Raj, named the main instigator in the mob violence in the FIR, is still absconding. So is the BJP Yuva Morcha Bulandshahr city president Shikhar Agarwal.
Kashmir freezes as mercury dips to -7°
Frozen pipes, jammed vehicles hit life as Srinagar sees the coldest day in 28 years
The Kashmir Valley went into deep-freeze mode on Thursday as the minimum temperature touched minus seven degrees Celsius in Srinagar for the first time in 28 years.
Residents woke up to blocked taps. Scores used blue flame burners to restore the supply. “It’s 10 in the morning and water in the tank as well as pipes has frozen. The entire family is waiting for water to start their day,” said Ajaz Ahmad, a banker from Srinagar’s Lal Bazaar area.

Those driving diesel vehicles found them jammed because of the freezing temperature, delaying their commutes. Several waterbodies, including the famous Dal Lake, was covered in sheaths of ice. “I used the oar to break the ice and go from my houseboat to the boulevard,” said Rameez Ahmad, a shikara owner.
The Meteorological Department said that Srinagar’s minimum temperature, which was five degrees below normal, plummeted to a record minus seven degrees for the first time since December 7, 1990, when it was minus 8.8° C. The day temperature hovered around 8° C.

Hotspots grow cold
“Tourist hotspots Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 8.3 and minus 9° C respectively,” said a MeT official. Kargil was the lowest, with a minimum temperature of minus 16.2° Celsius and day tempera-ture of minus 3.2 Celsius.
Many chose traditional and modern heating. Hamam, a room in traditional houses where firewood is burnt beneath a floor of special stones, remains the preferred mode.

The Doctors Association Kashmir, which represents a union of doctors, warned of increase in heart attacks, referring to the research showing an increase of 53% in such cases during peak winters.

“Frigid temperatures constrict blood vessels and increases blood pressure. Such a condition makes heart attack or stroke more likely. The blood tends to be thicker and stickier during extreme cold, which makes it easier to clot,” said DAK president Dr. Nisar-ul-Hassan.
Meanwhile, the MeT has predicted dry days ahead and warned of more dip in the minimum temperature in the coming days. Kashmir is reeling under the harshest 40-day winter spell, locally called chillai kalan, and will end on January 30.
